Create a Focal Point in any room

If These Focal Walls Could Talk

They would say, “Here I am!” Focal points or accent walls in a room often act as a distraction tactic for those who understand how to draw the eye to a particular spot in any room. The main reason for creating a focal point or accent wall is to show off the given space.  If you’ve been binge watching HGTV, then by now you know creating a focal point in a room is usually visually appealing, interesting and engages the brain.

Numerous Ways

Much like you, the focal point or accent wall is unique depending on the personality of the owner. From an architectural feature, indoor garden, fireplace, mirror, unique furniture, sculpture, an avante garde bit of art, accent colour wall or even outdoor views by way of floor-to-ceiling windows.

Once you have decided on which room you want to create a focal point, you then have to work the furniture and other accents around the focal point in order to harmonise the space. In a living room, the focal point is usually created around the entertaining area. In the dining room the focal point is the dining table and its lighting fixture above. In the bedroom, the focal point is the bed and any wall mural or photos above the bed. A focal point can also be created in a kitchen with an eye catching backsplash or pendant lighting fixture.

Some rooms have a natural focal point like a built in fireplace or some architectural feature.  If you do have either one, that area or feature needs to be accentuated to create visual appeal. If you are like me, living in the Caribbean and do not have a fire place nor any architectural feature in the room, then you create your own focal point. It is easy as a tropical breeze.

Let’s Start Here

  1. Start by finding the wall space in the room where the eye goes to first when you first enter.
  2. Consider the space’s ceiling height and shape to start creating a focal point.
  3. Then look for a WOW accessory which will draw the eye to it or chose the biggest piece of furniture and accentuate around it.
  4. Or place an antique or unique piece of furniture as a statement piece in the room and make it a conversation piece.

Some ideas include using various shapes and sizes of photo frames with your favourite family memories to capture your guests’ attention. Install track lighting to emphasise the photos and frames. Another favourite is using large attractive framed mirrors to catch attention anytime you walk into the room, especially since most people cannot resist peering into any mirror.

While these are just a few examples, the great thing is, it’s your room! Go on and start playing and in no time your own space will be personalized to your liking. All you have to remember is to be mindful of the flow and harmony among the other elements within the room.
